Is it safe to pop a boil – and, if you do, will it help it heal faster? Boils, also known as furuncles, are a common problem that are more frequently seen in children and teenagers – particularly children who play outside where they’re exposed to dirt. Children are more susceptible to boils because their immune systems are less capable of destroying the bacteria that causes them. Boils can be painful – and there’s always the temptation to pop one in hopes of helping it heal faster. Should you do it?

Can playing brain fitness games improve memory in the elderly? According to a new study, games for brain fitness could play a role in improving verbal and visual memory in elderly people who have mild memory loss.

According to a recent study, elderly people with mild memory impairment and cognitive deficits can experience modest improvements when they play brain fitness games that challenge their ability to think and remember.

To test this, researchers instructed a group of thirty-eight elderly patients to play computer based brain fitness games for an average of 92 sessions. There was also a control group who didn’t play brain fitness games – which consisted of games that challenged memory, spatial skills, and math and language skills at levels that gradually increased in difficulty.

10 Health Benefits of Carrots

Posted by admin 27 Apr, 2010

Vision: This is what carrots are commonly known for, helping with eyesight. And how is this? It’s all that Vitamin A in carrots. But don’t be fooled. Carrots won’t suddenly give you perfect vision. What carrots, and Vitamin A, can best help with concerning vision is difficult vision at night. So, if you have a hard [...]

  1. So, if you have a hard time seeing at night, give carrots a try. Also, studies show carrots help to reduce the chances of cataracts.
  2. Obesity: Yep, carrots can help in the battle of the bulge. Carrots contain plenty of fiber, which helps the bowels to work better and aids in passing food through the body. Less food, less weight. Simple.
  3. Lower cholesterol: Carrots also contain a good quantity of soluble fiber calcium pectate, which binds with bile acids in the body to draw cholesterol out of the blood stream. This cholesterol then passes out of the body.
  4. High blood pressure: Sodium is a bad thing when it comes to high blood pressure. For one thing, all that sodium helps to hold fluid in the body and that is one element that raises blood pressure. What’s good for combating sodium? Potassium. And what has a good amount of potassium? Carrots, of course. The potassium in carrots helps to level out the sodium in the body, and the fiber in the carrots helps to pass some of that sodium on out of the body. Thus, carrots help with high blood pressure.
  5. Clean teeth: Yes, these orange vegetables even help to clean your teeth, and are a great way to keep your mouth clean after a meal. Minerals in carrots help to kill germs in the mouth and to clean away tooth decay. So, if you can’t brush, at least chomp into a carrot.
  6. Anti-oxidant: Carrots contain tons of beta-carotene, which works as an anti-oxidant that helps the body to combat cell damage done to the body by impurities in the bloodstream and the like such as chemicals or even oxygen. However, as always, check with your doctor about the benefits you could receive from various foods because over-indulging in any food (even carrots) might not be what your body needs.
  7. Diarrhea: All that fiber in carrots can also help to ease a trouble digestive system, including the stomach and intestines, and can help to slow or halt the growth of bacteria in the stomach. Generally carrots served in a liquid form, juice or soup, serve best for purposes of dealing with diarrhea.
  8. Cancer: This one is somewhat debatable. Some studies have suggested the beta-carotene in carrots helps to reduce the chances of cancer, specifically lung cancer. But some other studies suggest high intake of beta-carotene can actually increase the chances of cancer. Who is right? Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Perhaps a little beta-carotene is good for you, but maybe a lot of it isn’t so good. Again, check with your physician.
  9. Blood sugar levels: The carotenoid found in carrots affects the level of insulin resistance in the body, thus naturally helping to control blood sugar levels.
  10. Headaches: If you’re suffering from a headache, give carrot juice a try. Supposedly carrot juice helps the body send blood to the brain, which will help to ease the pain of headaches.

It’s not a vitamin you hear about often, but getting more vitamin K could decrease your risk of lymphoma – a serious form cancer that affects immune cells known as lymphocytes – causing enlargement of the lymph nodes. A new study shows that an obesity gene that more than a third of Americans have may increase the risk of dementia and other degenerative diseases of the brain. This gene, called the FTO gene, was first discovered several years ago, and although having this gene doesn’t necessarily mean that a person will become obese, it can make it more difficult to lose weight.

Researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles discovered that a variant of the FTO gene is associated with loss of brain tissue – which could increase the risk of dementia. By doing imaging studies on the brains of 206 healthy, elderly people, they found that those who had a variant of the FTO gene also had less brain tissue when they mapped out their brain density.
